C. B. Woodworth established a toiletry company in 1856 in Rochester, New York. One of the major cosmetic lines released by C.B. Woodworth was Karess. Karess was marketed as a luxury line, and Karess established an international presence in France to compete with the French market. Shortly after, Bourjois, a French company, and Woodworth merged to create The International Perfume Company Inc. Karess compacts were produced after the merger until 1940.
