David H. McConnell was a traveling book salesman who gave free cosmetic samples with his book sales. When it became clear that customers were more interested in the beauty products, he recruited women to sell the beauty products door-to-door. Avon created a business model for women to join an sell all around the United States. Avon is still in business today, and while the company does not sell door-to-door, the brand continues to grow and has become internationally available to consumers.
