John H. Woodbury began treating skin ailments after working in podiatry. He created toiletries to treat minor skin imperfections before opening his own dermatological institute in New York City. After the success of his practice and an expansion of its services to the public, Andrew Jergens began selling Woodbury skin soap and acquired half of the institute. John H. Woodbury died and Jergens kept the name, “Woodbury,” leading to legal disputes years after his death. Many federal regulations forced the company to adjust, but they continued to be a success producing cosmetics, facial exercise regimens and movie star ad campaigns until the brand sold to American Brands.
