Fred W. Stecher started Pompeian as a skin cream company in Cleveland, Ohio. Pompeian experimented with many promotional materials, but came to be known for their beauty posters. A range of cosmetics under the name, “Nymfaun,” were released and briefly sold under the Pompeian brand. Because of this and other economic issues of the time, Pompeian was acquired by Colgate in 1927. After the sale to Colgate a high end, professional line was released and packaging was revamped. A U.K. office opened and a scare campaign was created by stressing the putiry of their ingredients. Shortly thereafter, the company was sold and its U.K office liquidated.
